The Kirkgate Centre’s after your vote!

Cockermouth’s Kirkgate Centre is hoping to follow up the success of its imaginative and popular 30th Anniversary Film Festival by picking up a prestigious award!

Centre staff and volunteers are hoping that customers who enjoy the range of films on offer at the Kirkgate on a weekly basis will feel able to vote for the centre in the first ever 2025 Cinema Of The Year Award.

The competition is organised by the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) and is sponsored by car giant KIA.

Voting closes on September 22 with five nominees announced on November 3 and the first ever winner unveiled at the British Independent Film Awards on November 30.

Kirkgate Chief Executive Emma Heys said: “We have a very active film programming group, which does a wonderful job in finding films for us to show on a weekly basis with several screenings per week.

“It was also instrumental in devising the programme for our very successful 30th Anniversary Film Festival that ran for a month and finished last month, showcasing films from each of the centre’s 30 years of operation and every one with a strong Cumbrian link.

“Success in this new award scheme would be just reward for the group’s members, and all other staff and volunteers who help out with our cinema programme, and we’re hoping that people might find the time to vote for us as a pat on the back!

“There’s no financial prize to be gained but success in a prestigious new competition like this would be great in terms of raising profile.”
