Three top quality acts who proved big hits on recent visits to Cumbria will shortly take centre stage at Cockermouth’s Kirkgate Arts Centre.
All three proved hugely popular when they visited Cumbria as part of the Arts Out West programme, which stages performances in community venues from Furness to the Solway and is managed by the Kirkgate.
“These three acts went down so well with audiences on their last visits that we’ve brought them back to Cumbria to play at the Kirkgate itself with the larger capacity that we can offer here at the centre,” said Kirkgate Chief Executive Emma Heys.
The three acts are:
· Old Baby Mackerel … a bluegrass trio that recently completed a run of sold-out shows at venues across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe and have played main stage slots at Glastonbury, Boomtown, Shambala and Latitude festivals. They played several dates in Cumbria last March and will be appearing at the Kirkgate on Saturday, March 21.
· Moscow Drug Club … A heady mix of Jazz French musette, Latin Grooves and New Orleans Swing, combining original material with songs by the likes of Jaques Brel, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Eartha Kitt. They’ll be appearing at the Kirkgate on Thursday, April 2, after impressing Cumbrian audiences back in September 2023.
· Spoonful of Julie (Kirkgate, Saturday, April 18) is the latest production by the versatile Nicola Mills, this time celebrating the music of Julie Andrews with songs from The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and much more. Nicola proved a big hit on a short Cumbrian tour last February when her Opera For the People show featured many classic songs.
Emma added: “Arts Out West is a fabulous concept that has, for many years, brought acts ranging from nationally-recognised theatre companies to international musicians to small venues around Cumbria such as village and community halls.
“Events are as much a social occasion as a performance and we’re delighted to play our part in delivering the programme. It’s so nice when we can bring back people
who’ve proved very popular with Cumbrian audiences and give them another showcase.” For further details of all Kirkgate Centre events, check out Events Archive – Kirkgate Arts and Heritage
