List of Volunteering roles/ opportunities

Bar

  • Sell drinks and snacks to the public
  • Re-stock the bar where necessary
  • Operate electronic till
  • Make note in bar book of any issues arising, fao volunteer bar manager
  • Collect empty glasses from auditorium
  • Wash glasses according to procedure
  • Cash up at end of night/ liaison with duty manager
  • Deal with customers politely

Time commitment: Once a fortnight, possibly more in busy periods

Supported by: Volunteer Coordinator

Box Office

  • Sell tickets to customers, day time or at events
  • Gift vouchers/ refunds/ credit notes etc
  • Operate the CRM ( Box Office computer system)
  • Deal with telephone enquiries
  • End of day banking reports( daytime only)
  • Process membership forms
  • Assist office with admin tasks, where required (eg shredding documents, stickering up fliers etc)

Time commitment: Daytime box office rota- once a fortnight, 10am – 1pm.

           Evening events: 2/3 evenings per month

Supported by: Admin assistant/ volunteer coordinator/ box office rota coordinator

Front of House

  • Tear tickets
  • Administrate collection of pre-sold tickets
  • Liaise with Duty Manager re house lights
  • Be a point of contact for audience enquiries
  • Sell icecreams where required
  • At each public event, one Front of house volunteer is required to stay in the auditorium for the duration of the event, for the purposes of health and safety and comfort of audience.
  • In case of fire evacuation, assist Duty manager with evacuation of audience

Time commitment: variable:

Cinema/Projectionists

  • Show films on our digital cinema equipment.
  • Set up for films, to include screen/ speakers/film set-up
  • Create play list of trailers and film
  • Troubleshoot technical equipment
  • Keep audience informed if anything goes wrong
  • Keep a cool head!
  • Join rota for regular Monday night screenings Live streaming events as required
  • Liaise with Operations Supervisor

Supported by: Operations supervisor, volunteer coordinator, projectionist team leader and rota coordinator

Time commitment: Various. Once a month for Monday night rota; live streaming and occasional daytime events as required

Duty Managers

To take overall responsibility for the Centre during a public event. This may include:

  • supervise the Front of House and Bar volunteers
  • open and lock up at beginning / end of the event
  • liaise with customers and artists
  • cash up and reconciling computer sales
  • Be in charge of fire evacuation procedures where necessary
  • Duty Managers need to have a good working knowledge of the Kirkgate, preferably with some experience of volunteering in the centre’s bar and box office.

Time commitment: Variable, but usually 8-12 hours over a 2-month period

Sound Engineers

  • Help setup and operate for music gigs, using Kirkgate electrical equipment and sound desk.
  • Work within Health and Safety guidelines
  • Put equipment away neatly and safely
  • Knowledge of sound equipment required

Supported by: Operations supervisor and volunteer coordinator

Time commitment: Occasional.

Band Champions

Key person responsible for meeting bands and getting them settled including sound checks until they leave at the end of the gig.  Also includes introducing the band to the audience.

Marketing and Publicity

There are many admin tasks associated with marketing and publicity of Kirkgate events, which volunteer are involved in. These include:

Print

  • checking that we have received posters / flyers from artists and agents;
  • adding details of our specific performances as appropriate;
  • printing and / or laminating posters (if they have been sent digitally or designed in house);
  • Refreshing in-house noticeboards
  • Organise poster/flier storage area

Time commitment: 2 hours per week 

Delivery and distribution

  • Local distribution to shops/ cafes/ B and Bs / schools as required -Once a week
  • Brochure delivery to sites ( eg TICs around West Cumbria. Expenses paid)

Time commitment: 3 hours 4 times per year. Own transport required. Expenses paid

Digital

  • Assist in uploading information about onto our website, box office system and regional event listing sites
  • Social Media posts
  • Liaison with press

Time commitment: Varies. As required

General Admin

To assist with the many and diverse tasks in the admin office, eg:

  • Filing
  • shredding
  • Photocopying
  • Inputting data
  • Answering phone when staff in meetings

Time commitment – 2-3 hours a week (eg I morning or afternoon)
