The Kirkgate Centre popular monthly Crafts@Kirkgate programme

The Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth’s popular monthly Crafts@Kirkgate programme led by professional artists is now up and running with all 2026 dates confirmed.

This year’s series kicked off last month with Flower Painting for Beginners.

It continues shortly with a Fused Glass Taster Session led by Roxanne Denny of RD Glass on Saturday, February 28 (2pm).

Kirkgate Chief Executive Emma Heys said: “During the session, participants will use pre-cut pieces of glass, glass rods and crushed glass in a range of shapes and colours.

“You will design and produce your choice of either a dish or wall hanging, which will then be taken to the tutor’s studio to fire. Roxanne will be on hand to assist, offer tips and to teach you about how fused glass is made. All materials and use of equipment are included in the price of £40. “It’s a great way to learn a new skill and have fun being creative with hands on instruction and the freedom to choose what you make. Your finished pieces can be collected in two weeks or posted to you for a charge of £5.” Emma suggested having a look at fused glass images prior to the class to give you an idea of what to expect and some inspiration! The Kirkgate offers further opportunities for those interested in crafts of all kinds. Kirkgate Crafters takes place on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7pm to 9pm at the centre.

Emma said: “Bring along a project you’re working on. Join us for craft and chat, share skills and to meet others. These sessions are open to all and all crafts are welcome – and our bar will be open for drinks and snacks.”
