The Oscar winners are on their way to Cockermouth!
The town’s Kirkgate Centre hosts weekly movie screenings with popular films shown each Friday, then the following Monday and Wednesday.
And this week’s offering is none other than Hamnet, for which star Jessie Buckley won the Oscar for Best Actress at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
The film dramatises the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife Anne (or Agnes) Hathaway (played by Buckley) as they cope with the death of their 11-year-old son Hamnet. It also stars Paul Mescal as William, alongside Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, and Noah Jupe in supporting roles.
Hamnet shows at 7pm on Friday night (March 20), then again at 8pm on Monday, March 23, and a third and final time on Wednesday, March 25 (2pm).
Oscars glitter returns on Friday, March 27, when Sentimental Value starts a three-screening run at the Kirkgate.
Sentimental Value, which won the Academy Award for International Film, is a critically-acclaimed 2025 Norwegian drama exploring family, memory and the complex dynamics between estranged relatives.
It stars Stellan Skarsgård as a film director estranged from his daughters (played by Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas). It also won Best Supporting Actor for Skarsgard at the Golden Globes and the best film not in the English language award at the Baftas plus six European film awards, including best film.
Sentimental Value shows at 7pm on Friday night (March 27), then again at 8pm on Monday, March 30, and a third and final time on Wednesday, April 1 (2pm).
Kirkgate Chief Executive Emma Heys said: “Top marks to our film programming group!
“They booked these films long before Oscars night so obviously know what will appeal to Academy judges and the general public alike!
“Ticket sales are already very strong for this Friday’s showing of Hamnet so, if you’re interested, we’d advise you to book through our website pretty quickly.
“To continue the run of quality films on offer, we’ll be showing The Secret Agent from Friday, April 17, and that too was nominated for multiple awards.”
