Kirkgate’s Cockermouth Heritage Group
Cockermouth Heritage Group is part of Kirkgate Arts & Heritage, based here at the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth. We keep memories of this fascinating Cumbrian town of Cockermouth alive.
We research local history and hold a heritage collection of photographs, artefacts and audio that preserve and showcase the rich heritage of Cockermouth and generations of local families and townspeople.
We also answer local and family history queries, and take part in other local activities which have a heritage theme.
Since 1992 our collection has grown and is used in a variety of ways designed to engage with all age groups from primary school children to care home residents, and from local people to visitors. We curate exhibitions at our venue on Kirkgate and at other town centre premises, including the Library and Hospital. We run sessions for local schools and community groups. We collaborate with other organisations focused on the heritage assets of Cockermouth, such as the Civic Trust and the Town Council, and we work in tandem with the Kirkgate Youth Theatre to bring stories of old Cockermouth and its characters to life in street theatre, in community settings and on the Kirkgate’s stage.
If you have photographs or artefacts that we can copy or you want to donate or submit an oral history audio file, please contact us at:
