Taste of the Lake District Exhibition

Exhibition will tell the story of brewing’s importance to Cockermouth

Final details have been confirmed ahead of the launch of an exhibition at Cockermouth’s Kirkgate Centre chronicling the fascinating history of beer and brewing in the town.

The Cockermouth Heritage Group has been exploring the origins of brewing as a cottage industry in the town up to the closure of Jennings Brewery and the effect that has had on the local community, with a series of free events leading up to next month’s exhibition.

The Taste of the Lake District exhibition will be on display at The Kirkgate from Friday, December 6, to Monday, December 16.

The exhibition launches the day before the start of the Taste Cumbria food festival (December 7 and 8) and the Kirkgate bar will be open during exhibition hours on both days (Saturday 11am – 4pm and Sunday 11am – 1pm).

Helen Johnston, Community Projects Officer, said: “It’s a great way to explore the history of brewing in Cockermouth and the leading role Jennings Brewery played in the town, both economically and socially.

“The exhibition has been curated by Charlotte Fairbairn, working with volunteers from the Cockermouth Heritage Group, and will be open every day between December 6 and 16 from 11am – 4pm, except Sunday, December 8, when it will close at 1pm.”

Entry to the exhibition is free and the Beer and Brewing in Cockermouth Project has been funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
